Our Authority In Christ

Key Verse: Luke 10:19 NIV
“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”

As followers of Christ, we often hear about the concept of “authority,” but it’s crucial to understand what this truly means in our daily lives. How do we walk in the authority that Jesus Christ has given us?

Understanding Our Authority

Jesus, in His ministry on earth, demonstrated authority over nature, spirits, and sickness. Before ascending to heaven, He passed this authority to His disciples. In Luke 10:19, Jesus didn’t just speak to the Twelve; He was addressing the seventy-two others sent out. This passage underscores a profound transfer of divine authority from Jesus to all who follow Him.

Exercising Our Authority

Authority in Christ isn’t about wielding power for personal gain or domination. It’s about advancing the kingdom of God and overcoming the powers of darkness that we encounter. This includes spiritual warfare, where our battles are fought in the spiritual realm against principalities and powers (Ephesians 6:12).

When Jesus mentions trampling on snakes and scorpions, He is using symbolic language for demonic forces. We are equipped to face these challenges, not in our strength, but through the power vested in us by Christ. This authority empowers us to pray with confidence, declare God’s word, and stand firm against spiritual darkness.

Living in Assurance

An important aspect of walking in our God-given authority is living in the assurance that “nothing will harm you.” This doesn’t mean Christians won’t face difficulties or persecution; rather, it assures us that in the grand eternal scheme, the victory is already ours through Christ. Our authority in Him protects us in ways that transcend our earthly understanding.

Practical Application

How do we apply this in our daily lives? It starts with a deep, abiding relationship with Jesus. Spend time in prayer and the Word. Know what the Scriptures say about your identity and authority in Christ. When facing challenges, whether they be temptations, trials, or spiritual warfare, remember and declare your position in Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the authority You’ve bestowed upon me through Jesus Christ. Help me to understand this authority more deeply and to use it wisely for Your glory. Teach me to stand firm against the enemy, equipped with Your Word and strengthened by Your Spirit. May I always remember that in You, I have the victory. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Today, let us walk confidently in the authority given to us by our Savior, using it to bring light into the darkness and proclaiming the victory of Jesus Christ over every power of the enemy.
